He has taught math at Nicollet Junior High for 8 years and BHS. He coached 3 years of junior high soccer and one year of high school soccer (all in Lakeville).  He now coaches soccer at Burnsville.

Coach Winterlin has been coaching Track and Field and Cross Country for 10 years. Coach Winterlin is an ELL Teacher at Burnsville High School and is no stranger to Track and Field.  His coaching talent was first seen at Pound Middle School in Nebraska where he coached track and field for two seasons.  He furthered his experience in Wichita, Kansas where he assisted with Cross Country and Track and Field at Wichita High School West.  After two amazing seasons he moved up to Minneapolis to be near his 13 nephews and nieces and to teach at William Byrne Elementary.  During this time, he took a position as a LifeTime Run Coach and enjoyed the challenge of coaching adult runners.  Last year he coached sprints and high jump for the girl’s track program and this fall was an assistant girls’ cross country coach all at Burnsville High School.  This season he looks forward to continue working with sprints, relays and possibly some high jump if he is lucky.

Winterlin LOVES to run around the lakes, stone arch, nine-mile creek and other gorgeous trails in the amazing Twin City area.  He also has the worst taste in emo music.

My name is Derek Schlager. Prior to teaching and coaching at Burnsville High School I competed at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field. While competing I had the opportunity to coach with Lakeville during their summer running program. After landing a teaching position at "the greatest school in the country," I began coaching Cross Country and Nordic Skiing and am privileged to be a new member of this track and field family. Running and competing have both played an instrumental role in my life. They have taught me the value in hard word, attention to detail, having a positive attitude, and, above all else, having fun in the face of any circumstance. I am blessed to be here and am excited to see what this season has in store.
